EXTERIOR
Few cars have the homologated visual impact of the 2.5-16 Evolution II. At a time when the German Touring car series had peaked in popularity and was arguably at it’s most competitive, the whole of Europe and particularly BMW would soon notice the effect of this wild styling exercise. This particular example has been carefully owned by fastidious collectors and presents in truly magnificent condition. The Blue black paintwork retains a deep, consistent lustre throughout with plastics and shadow line trim pleasingly free of any marks or wear; a definitive timewarp example.
The layered body kit sweeps through the flanks of the car beautifully and lines up exactly as it should. The kit served an aerodynamic purpose – it was wind tunnel tested to reduce drag to 0.29, while at the same time increasing downforce. Period anecdotes tell of BMW research and development chief, Wolfgang Reitzle, saying “the laws of aerodynamics must be different between Munich and Stuttgart; if that rear wing works, we’ll have to redesign our wind tunnel.” The anecdote claims that BMW did.
INTERIOR
Highly specified with a full black leather interior the deeply bolstered front seats show near new with a matte finish. There is very little wear to report in the cabin, with gearbox tunnel, sills and carpets all mark free. The wooden inlays and surrounds retain good lacquer and the fit and finish are pleasingly free of cracks or distortion. Some period additions from new, an oil temperature gauge, stopwatch and voltmeter, are key to assuring the driver of the homologation bloodline, with a working stopwatch also available. The self-levelling suspension can be adjusted from inside the car.
The rear bench is quite unique in housing two individual seats, a treat for the often overlooked rear passengers, offering support far beyond that of a typical setup. The boot area is very clean and puts forward a strong case for practical considerations.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Mercedes had to work hard on extracting every last drop from the 190 in an attempt to restore parity with the BMW E30 that had dominated the DTM series – enter the 2.5L with AMG power pack. Having been well serviced the engine pulls very well and it is on-cam when the car comes alive – really a very eager engine with a beautifully balanced chassis. The dogleg gearbox is a joy to use; 1st gear engages with minimum of fuss from cold and moves away cleanly and smoothly, whilst working the more familiar H pattern becomes totally intuitive over time.
The AMG power pack significantly alters the performance to something more befitting of the outrageous design!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
No homolgation special is complete without a complimentary wheel design and the Evolution 6 spoke wheels still present in excellent order having never been refurbished. Matching ContiSport 2′s provide the contact patch, with the front’s just replaced with plenty of tread remaining in the rear.
The 4 piston to front braking system provides excellent stopping power with no adverse pitch or pull.
HISTORY FILE
This Evo II is originally a German car which was imported by a Japanese collector with 2800km on the clock; prior to export the car was serviced with the main dealer at Kundendienst in June of 2005. The first Japanese owner would service the car at 3,284km. A second Japanese collector then bought the car on 10 June 2009 with 8100km and it received a further service with Mercedes Benz at 9,244km.
The original import document and Japanese registration docs are present in the history file as well as a checklist on the car conducted by Mercedes-Benz in Kyoto. The full book pack is also present and correct.
