1998 TVR Chimaera

Seller's description

Blackpool based TVR have a way of doing things and it is never the normal way but in doing things their own was they have produced many of the most iconic lightweight sports cars in modern British history and the Chimaera was one of their master pieces. It uses a similar tubular chassis, Rover V8 engine and stylish fibreglass body as the Griffith but the Chimaera had a longer wheels base and softer suspension to give it more space and GT credentials. What it created was a delightful mix of the usual TVR madness but useable package as a weekend toy with space for luggage and blistering speed to keep the most hard core speed freak happy.
The Chimaera was launched in 1992 and ran through to 2003 with a selection of engines available starting with the 4.0ltr, 4.3ltr, 4.5ltr and finally the 5.0ltr. Like all TVRs, drivers aids are in short supply so ABS and Traction Crontrol are on the missing list. The car is light and blisteringly fast in the right hands but requires skill and respect to get the most out of it and must be one of the purest ‘drivers cars’ of recent years.
The car we offer here is a 1998, 500 model with the 5.0ltr engine and must be one of, if not the best in the country. A man in the Isle of Man ordered the car new but he never took delivery and it went to its first owner through TVR Centre Ltd in Birmingham, where it had its pre delivery inspection. The car then passed briefly through the hands of a second owner before passing to its third owner Alexander McDonald in 2000 who owned the car for nearly 14 years. The current owner acquired the car off Alex in 2014 when the car had 18272 miles.
In the current owners procession the car has had a complete restoration. Finding some corrosion on the chassis out-riggers it was decided to change certain parts but on inspection it was found that a complete new chassis was a very similar price to having the remedial work done so RT Racing (who make the chasses for TVR) provided a new chassis in 2015 which was then fitted. While this work was being done all other parts that would benefit from being replaced were done at the same time. This included a complete repaint of the car and roof, a new radiator, the central door locking system and new alarm, wishbone and suspension bushes, rare carbon-fibre dash, carpets, hood, battery, all oils and fluids, steering rack box, brake discs and pads, air filter, shock absorbers and springs, as well as many other smaller parts.
The car is now in a black heavily flaked paint scheme with a pale interior. The condition is stunning and there is a nice history file of the work done as well as receipts for the parts. There is also a book noting the date, mileage, fuel type (95/97), and MPG for all journeys done by the current owner over the past 2 years!!
The original handbook with dealer stamps is with the car as well as a rare hard top.
A very fast and enjoyable car in excellent condition throughout.
