They are the stuff of legends. And we’re sure Steve McQueen would be in amazement. He made the Porsche 917 in gulf Livery famous in the 1971 action film “Le Mans” and on August 27, 2015, Porsche Centre Saskatchewan unveiled two exceptional Porsche 918 Spyders at its Saskatoon facility. The only two, period correct* cars of their kind in the world, these 918’s were factory-built and exclusively customized with approval of both Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Porsche AG and Gulf Oil worldwide, two historic racing partners of the early 70’s.
Following its 2013 debut at the Frankfurt International Autoshow, the 918 Spyder captured the worldwide press with its designer, innovative plug-in hybrid concept and super sports car performance. It shattered the Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record by an astonishing 14 seconds, posting a 6 minute 57 second run. With V8 and hybrid system combined, the 918 has a total output of 887 hp.

Porsche’s rich history in racing dates back to 1948 while Porsche and Gulf Oil had a sponsorship relationship through the 60’s and into the early 70’s. It’s final year to race the iconic Gulf Livery baby blue and orange colours was 1971 with the Porsche 917 (made famous with actor Steve McQueen in “Le Mans”).

“The 918 is, by any stretch of the imagination, a supercar,” declares owner Wyant. Porsche limited production to 918 units and those with the Spyder Weissach package boldly taking things to a more extreme level: weight reduction of 41 kg, additional use of carbon fibre, titanium and ceramics, lightweight magnesium wheels, lightweight sport bucket seats, carbon interior and lightweight doors.
Porsche no longer had a business relationship with Gulf and Porsche AG would have to be convinced to accommodate factory production of two one-of-a-kind cars with exacting detail (particularly the factory paint in period correct Gulf Livery colours – the first in factory since 1971).
Each 918 Spyder engine was hand built by a single technician over 20 hours. The detail on these two cars is meticulous indeed, including the Gulf logo embossed into the leather seat backs in place of the Porsche crest.

From custom painted brake calipers (acid green just didn’t work!) to factory painting with the Gulf brand (no decals here!), custom upholstery stitching, Gulf Livery key fob and so much more, these cars transcend the normal supercar.
“Their exclusive and unique story enhances this already magnificent car that Porsche manufactures. These one-off, period correct Gulf Livery productions may be priceless, but one is most certainly for sale,” concludes Wyant.
While he plans to keep one of them for his own private collection, the market for the other is certainly the world stage, to someone with an appetite for a very special, high-end and collectible performance automobile.
